April 2026

As we move further into April, there is often a quiet sense of change in the air. The days are longer, the light is softer, and things begin to feel as though they are shifting, even if only slightly.

For many people, this time of year brings a gentle awareness of how they have been feeling. You might notice your mood more, reflect on your relationships, or find yourself thinking, “Something feels off, but I’m not quite sure why.”

If you have been considering therapy, you may also be wondering what kind of support would actually help. One approach you might come across is Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) but what does that really mean?

A Simple Way to Understand IPT

At its heart, Interpersonal Psychotherapy is based on a straightforward but powerful idea:

Our relationships and our emotional wellbeing are intricately connected.

When something in our relationships feels difficult, whether that’s conflict, loss, change, or feeling disconnected, it can have a real impact on our mood. And when our mood is low or unsettled, it can make relationships feel harder to navigate.

IPT focuses on understanding and improving this connection.

Rather than looking at everything that has ever happened in your life, IPT stays grounded in what is happening in the present, particularly in your current relationships and life circumstances.

What Does IPT Help With?

IPT is often used to support people who are experiencing:

  • Low mood or depression
  • Anxiety linked to relationships or life stress
  • Grief and loss
  • Difficulties in relationships
  • Life transitions that feel overwhelming

It can also be helpful if you have noticed patterns in how you relate to others or cope emotionally including patterns around eating, withdrawal, or feeling stuck.

The Four Key Areas We Focus On

In IPT, we work within four main areas that commonly affect mood:

🌿 Grief and Loss

Supporting you to process the loss of someone or something important, at your own pace.

🔄 Life Transitions

Helping you adjust to changes whether expected or unexpected that may be affecting your sense of stability or identity.

Relationship Difficulties

Working through conflict, misunderstandings, or tension in important relationships.

🌫️ Feeling Disconnected or Isolated

Exploring patterns that may be making it harder to build or maintain meaningful connections.

You do not need to fit neatly into one of these areas therapy is shaped around your experience.

What Happens in IPT Sessions?

IPT is a structured, collaborative approach. That means we work together to:

  • Understand what has been affecting your mood
  • Identify which areas of your life feel most relevant
  • Explore patterns in relationships and communication
  • Find practical, manageable ways to create change

There’s space to talk openly, but also a gentle focus on helping things feel different not just understood.

A Different Kind of Therapy Experience

Many people come to IPT after trying to manage things on their own for a long time. You might be used to pushing through, minimising how you feel, or not quite knowing how to explain it.

IPT offers something a little different:

  • A focus on the here and now
  • A clear connection between emotions and relationships
  • A pace that feels manageable and grounded
  • Support that is both practical and compassionate

There are no expectations to have everything figured out before you begin.

Why April Can Be a Good Time to Start

April does not demand big changes. It simply offers a moment to notice what is there.

If you have been feeling low, disconnected, or unsure of how to move forward, this could be a time to gently explore what is going on with support.

Starting therapy does not have to be a dramatic step. It can be a quiet one.

You Do not Have to Work It Out Alone
